I got a phone call from a really good friend tonight who is going through a really hard time right now. She had had a hard day and was upset and crying and just needed to talk. I was happy to listen to her, afterall, she has been there for me so many times before. As we talked my heart just ached for her. She's in a situation that I have no power over. I can't snap my fingers and make it all go away, I can't really give her what she needs to truly be comforted. As a friend, I want to be the fixer. I want to walk through the problem with you and talk about how it can be made better and then smile and laugh when it's all over. But what do you do when that's not possible? When all you can do is hold them while they cry? When you know the silence on the other side of the line is your friend trying so hard to hold it all together. Trying to talk through her tears. That just tears me up inside. That helpless feeling you get when you know you're not enough. I can tell her that I'm here for her, that she can call me anytime, but I know I'm not the one she needs most right now. How do you help when all you can do is cry with them?

Just writing a blog like this shows how much you care about your friend. Sometimes, there is nothing you can say. The only thing you can do is just be there to listen. I know that sounds so cliche, but it's true. I'm going to pray for your friend. Pray that God gives her the direction and guidance she needs to make the decisions she has ahead of her.

The best kind of comfort you can offer is an open, unjudgemental heart and listening ear. I have been on the receiving end of that from you and I know that you are very comforting when someone is hurting.
